Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Bill Provides $30 Million Less for AFG
On July 14, the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee approved legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for FY 2011, including providing $390 million for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program and $420 million for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program. Contact Your U.S. Representatives and Senators Over August RecessMost U.S. Representatives and Senators spend the majority of the month of August in their home districts/states interacting with constituents during the annual Congressional recess. With an election coming up in November, the next month represents a prime opportunity for National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) members to interact with their elected federal officials to ask for their support of issues and legislation that are critical to the nation’s volunteer fire service. Transportation Secretary Names National EMS Advisory Council Members
NVFC EMS/Rescue Section Chair Ken Knipper to represent the volunteer EMS discipline

On July 19, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced the appointment of 23 individuals representing various disciplines involved in the provision of emergency medical services (EMS) to serve two-year terms as members of the National EMS Advisory Council (NEMSAC). The Council, which was created in 2007, provides stakeholder input to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Office of EMS on standards, guidelines, benchmarks, and data collection. CFSI Releases Video Advocating for Support of AFG and SAFERThe Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) has produced an educational video designed to increase awareness about the importance of the Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Programs. Featuring prominent fire service leaders and a cadre of firefighters from various fire service fields, the video highlights the many benefits of the two grant programs - from enhancing the response capabilities for all types of emergencies to stimulating local economies through the manufacturing of equipment and apparatus. Deadline for World Trade Center Workers to Register for Workers’ Compensation Approaches
Workers must register their service by Monday, Sept. 13, to preserve eligibility

People who performed rescue, recovery, or clean-up work at the World Trade Center have until Monday, September 13 to register with the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board to preserve their eligibility for future benefits, should they ever need them. Read full article.

Continuing Education Program Available to Help First Responders Dealing with Ankylosing Spondolytis PatientsThe Spondolytis Association of America (SAA), in cooperation with the National Association of Emergency Management Technicians (NAEMT), has created a continuing education video training program on Ankylosing Spondolytis. The program is titled Ankylosing Spondylitis: Managing Patients in an Emergency Setting, A Primer for First Responders. This training is not intended to be diagnostic, but rather to prepare an emergency medical technician to do the right thing to prevent further injury once a person has self-reported, in some way, that he or she has ankylosing spondylitis (AS). New NFIRS Web-Based Data Entry Tool Now Available The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) United States Fire Administration (USFA) has recently made available a new National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) web-based data entry tool known as the Data Entry Browser Interface (DEBI). The new DEBI enables total web-based data entry into NFIRS, eliminating the need to download and install client software on the NFIRS user’s computer. DEBI will run using standard web browsers that will provide access to the application from any computer that has an Internet connection. Read full article.^ Back to Top
