2024 Annual NSFA Member Meeting to Be Held Via Zoom

June 22, 2024 @ 9AM
Via Zoom

It was with heavy hearts that we announced the cancellation of the Nevada State Firefighter’s Association’s 89th Annual Fire Training Conference, which was to be held in Lovelock, Nevada. This event, a cherished tradition for nearly nine decades, has been a cornerstone of our community, fostering camaraderie, professional development, and the exchange of invaluable skills and knowledge.

The Weight of This Decision

The decision to cancel this year’s conference was not made lightly. We understand the disappointment and frustration this news brought. For many of us, the conference is more than just an event—it’s a gathering of friends and colleagues who share a common mission. It’s a time to learn from one another, to honor our achievements, and to recommit to our vital work of protecting lives and property.

Looking Forward: Membership Meeting

Despite this setback, our commitment to the firefighter community remains unwavering. We will hold our annual membership meeting on Saturday, June 22 at 9 AM via Zoom.

Please register for the meeting using the following link: NSFA Membership Meeting Registration.

Attendance Requirements

To attend the meeting:

  1. You must be a FY2024 (7/1/23-6/30/24) dues-paid member of the NSFA or an invited guest.
  2. You must have individually preregistered online for this meeting.

To be considered a delegate for your department:

  1. You must be a FY2024 (7/1/23-6/30/24) dues-paid member.
  2. Your membership type must be that of a Regular or Life Member.
  3. You must be present at roll call at the time of the meeting.

Important Notes for a Smooth Meeting

  1. Joining by Phone: Joining by phone will not be allowed. Participants must join either by the Zoom app or web.
  2. Individualized Link: Those who have been approved to attend will receive an individualized link to join this meeting.
  3. Early Login: Participants will be able to join the meeting up to 5 minutes prior to the meeting time.
  4. Meeting Lock: The meeting will be locked after the roll call, and no new participants may be able to join.
  5. Reconnection: Participants who may accidentally be disconnected will need to wait to be allowed back into the meeting.
  6. Disruptive Behavior: Anyone deemed disruptive to the meeting may, at the behest of the board, be ejected from the meeting and not allowed to rejoin.

Zoom Etiquette for a Smooth Meeting

To ensure our virtual meeting is productive and respectful, here are some guidelines for good Zoom etiquette:

  1. Register Early: Complete your registration as soon as possible to ensure you receive the meeting details and can address any technical issues beforehand.
  2. Be Punctual: Join the meeting a few minutes early to test your audio and video settings and to avoid disrupting the session once it has started.
  3. Mute Your Microphone: Keep your microphone muted unless you are speaking to minimize background noise and distractions.
  4. Use Video Wisely: If possible, enable your video to create a more engaging and interactive atmosphere. However, be mindful of your surroundings and ensure there is nothing inappropriate or distracting in the background.
  5. Participate Actively: Engage in discussions, ask questions, and contribute your thoughts. Use the “raise hand” feature or the chat function to avoid interrupting others.
  6. Dress Appropriately: Wear appropriate attire as you would for an in-person meeting. This helps maintain a professional atmosphere.
  7. Stay Focused: Avoid multitasking during the meeting to give your full attention to the discussions and presentations.
  8. Technical Preparedness: Ensure you have a stable internet connection and that your device is charged or plugged in to avoid interruptions.

Moving Forward Together

While we will miss the invaluable in-person interactions and the rich experiences of our annual conference, we are confident that our virtual meeting will be a meaningful opportunity to connect and collaborate. Let us use this time to strengthen our bonds and prepare for a brighter, safer future.

Thank you for your understanding and continued dedication. We look forward to seeing you on Zoom and working together to overcome the challenges ahead.

Stay safe, stay strong.

With deep appreciation,
The Nevada State Firefighter’s Association

Please feel free to share this message with fellow NSFA Members. Together, we will navigate these challenging times and emerge stronger and more united than ever.

NVFC Webinar: Update from OSHA on the Proposed Emergency Response Standard

May 9, 2024 11:00 AM Pacific

On February 5, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published the proposed new Emergency Response Standard, and the public has until June 21 to provide comments. If adopted as is, this proposed standard would bring immense challenges to volunteer departments, and some may even be forced to shut down. It is important that the volunteer fire and emergency service understand how this rule would impact them and provide their comments to OSHA before June 21. This NVFC presentation will allow you to hear directly from OSHA staff about how volunteers would be impacted by this standard and what you can do to make your voice heard.

Important Note

Due to this being a pending federal rulemaking, the presenters from OSHA will not be able to take comments on the proposed standard. They will only be able to provide clarifications on the content of notice of proposed rulemaking or guidance on where and how to submit a public comment.

Presenters

  • Mark Hagemann – Director, Office of Safety Systems, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, OSHA
  • Bill Hamilton – Fire Protection Engineer, Office of Safety Systems, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, OSHA

Remembering Past President Steve Carr

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Steve Carr, the esteemed past president of the Nevada State Firefighters Association. Steve dedicated his life to serving the community and played a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the association. His leadership, commitment, and passion for firefighting left an indelible mark on the organization and the firefighting community as a whole.

In honor of Steve’s memory, friends, colleagues, and community members are invited to join us in a memorial service on Friday, December 8th, at 11 am. The service will be held at the Fernley Main Station, a place that holds significant meaning for Steve and the firefighting community he so faithfully served. This will be an opportunity for us to come together, share our memories, and celebrate the life of a remarkable individual who made a lasting impact on the firefighting community in Nevada.

As we gather to remember Steve Carr, let us reflect on the legacy he leaves behind and the inspiration he provided to all who had the privilege of working alongside him. In this difficult time, the support of the community is invaluable, and we hope to see many faces on Friday as we pay tribute to a leader, mentor, and friend.

Fire Shows West Funding Opportunities

Good evening NSFA members!

Fire Shows West is coming up September 18-20th. If you are planning on attending, here are two ways you can lessen the cost.

The NSFA has chosen to offer unused stipends from conference to those who would like to attend Fire Shows West. Applications must be turned in by August 8th.

The Association offers $250.00 stipends to assist members in good standing to attend various training events throughout the State of Nevada, including the Annual Training Conference. With the ever increasing cost of travel and reduction in fire department budgets, we hope this will assist you in attending training through the NSFA.

The second way is by applying for Dayle Wellbrock scholarship through Fire Shows West. This application is due July, 15th!

What is the mission for the Dayle Wellbrock Scholarship?

The mission of the scholarship is to allow members of the fire and emergency services to offer new insights and set new directions to an issue that currently pose challenges to the fire and emergency services.

What will this Scholarship Award cover?
  • A full Conference pass to the FireShowsWest conference
  • $500 stipend for travel and meals
  • Hotel accommodations for three nights
  • Participate on a panel discussion during the conference relating to the program topic’s issues in the fire service

Register for the 2022 training conference here!

Register for Conference online!

The NSFA is pulling out all the stops this year after two years of not being together. With the help of our dedicated vendors, we are able to offer the membership a full registration for only $50.00 including lunches and dinners. Virginia City is always a great place to get together so register quick, as rooms are limited.

As always, we will have the manipulative skills competition, water fights and monkey drills. Fun activities will be golf, trap shoot and horseshoes. Rumor also has it that a couple of cornhole tournaments are in the works.

Keynote speakers – Steve Hirsch, Chairman- NVFC & Dr. Elwood Schmidt, Author of the History of EMS in Nevada

5 Rights of the First Line – Hortons & Hunt

In the fire service, when it comes to suppression, we have a lot of grey area in the way we do business. We use terms like “situationally dependent” and “every fire is different.” The reason we use these terms is because they are true. We have an ever evolving and incredibly dynamic battlefield where too many hard rules limit the ability for thinking firefighters to find solutions to unique problems. Unfortunately, terms like these also give our less motivated firefighters a cop-out when it comes to possessing practical and applicable job knowledge. Even worse, it fails to provide a framework for younger, less-experienced firefighters to reference when their time comes on the nozzle.

Are you aware of new requirements and how they can affect your operation, community impressions and funding opportunities? This presentation will address the basics on both subjects and how you can be the best you can be for your community.
